The article on caregivers' needs ("Caregiver help is a growing concern," Sept. 17) states: "But [John] Coffey wonders how they will determine when it is better for [his mother] to have additional care or move her to a health facility. What he needs is advice on how best to manage his mother's care, he said."
This is precisely the work that geriatric care managers do. These professionals are typically social workers or nurses.
A comprehensive assessment of the elder's situation, needs and desires for care is done and a plan developed. Geriatric care managers can assist with putting that plan in place and often remain involved to make sure that changing needs are addressed. The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers can help one find a care manager nearby.
