Letter: Republicans seek failure, hurt U.S.

As the presidential election draws closer, I am confused by how well extremists' views are winning over some voters. From cutting programs for victims of previous GOP economic plans, to the suppression of the vote and women's rights, I fail to see why Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, are the solution to our problems.

This country would be in worse shape if not for the efforts of the Obama administration. We could be Greece or Spain with unemployment rates more than 20 percent and an economy in dire straits; it will take decades to recover. Congress blocked President Barack Obama's jobs act and resisted any effort to continue forward. It was GOP leaders who swore to make President Obama a failure and, by default, this country.

Our President took decisive action and helped lift us up in 2009, keeping one of our major industries from collapsing, saving thousands of jobs and avoiding a depression. How can you expect him to cure in a short period of time an insidious disease that the Republicans created over eight years?

The approval rating of Congress is at an all-time low, yet many are willing to support candidates whose ideas enrich only special interests and not 100 percent of Americans. As a country, we are beginning to recover, slowly but surely.

Are we looking to repeat the past and hope for a different result? Albert Einstein defined that as "insanity."
