Letter: Resort sympathy a bit suspicious

When I read the letter from Peter Bauer ("Don't blame suit for resort closure," Oct. 17), I followed a simple set of rules. The three most important are:

Assume his only goal is to eliminate the human presence in the Adirondack Park.

Recognize that he is a professional lobbyist for an extremist group.

Apply the test of logic to his statements. If he passes it, look again.

As to reopening Big Tupper Ski Area, certainly last year's lack of snow was significant but this year's frivolous litigation was determinative.

The talk of snowmaking is a red herring. Much equipment had been sold before we bought the mountain in 2004. ARISE could not have afforded the electricity needed for snowmaking.

If ARISE does open the ski area, we will do it when our business plan dictates. We have told the Planning Board we will set aside 7.25 percent of gross eastern great camp sales for the ski area and assess homeowners $1,000 annually for lift tickets.

As to Protect the Adirondacks and the Sierra Club being sympathetic to any aspirations of Tupper Lake, show me the evidence. They oppose anything that might help the park or attract people to live there.

Why would anyone but a misanthrope make a donation to any Adirondack preservationist group?
