Letter: Voters' league advocates reform

More vigorous enforcement of campaign finance laws and more disclosure of campaign contributions, as identified in the editorial "Campaign law rhetoric, reality," Oct. 24, are two important, long-overdue reforms for New York.

The League of Women Voters of New York State has been advocating for these and other reforms for more than 20 years to restore trust in our political system. The current contribution limits are far too high; enforcement is too lax; loopholes abound; and big money is too influential in politics. The consequence is unequal political power for the average New Yorker.

The League believes strong, well-enforced campaign finance regulations, along with a system of small-donor matching grants, are a pathway to expanding voter participation, increasing more candidate diversity and lessening the impact of special interests.

Community forums presenting a League educational program analyzing the weaknesses of current campaign finance regulation and suggesting reform are being organized around the state during the next four months. We encourage the public to attend these forums and participate in the discussion for reform. The time is now to reform this much maligned system.

SALLY ROBINSON

President, League of Women Voters of New York State
