Letter: Pawnshop law a good idea

I read with great interest the editorial regarding my local law ("Don't pawn this law off on us," Oct. 16). Contrary to most of the representations in the opinion, this local law will help the citizens of Albany County. In fact, the editorial helps point out how.

As the opinion verifies, burglaries are the second least-solved type of crime, according to the FBI. We all agree something needs to be done to help, and this local law will help. The purpose of this local law is to protect consumers and help victims recover their stolen valuables. The sharing of information and partnerships that will result from the implementation of this local law will result in increased recovered valuables and, more than likely, an increase in the rate of solved burglaries.

Laws such as "Local Law G" do work. The editorial mentioned the idea that, because of a similar, existing law in the city of Albany, burglars sell their goods in Colonie. The adoption of this local law will enhance the Albany city law and, should burglars go anywhere in Albany County, a means to help apprehend them will exist. I suspect some will speculate burglars will only travel outside the county to sell stolen goods. Speculation like that would be without merit and would certainly give the burglars way too much credit.

It's time to pass this local law. As the opinion states, I have worked with the dealers to address their needs; now, the citizens of Albany County require their needs to be addressed. Those unfortunate individuals who have been victimized have waited long enough.
