Letter: Voting critical to America's future

Election Day is Tuesday.

Millions are still recovering from Superstorm Sandy, the devastating triple combination of hurricane, frigid air and higher tides of a full moon.

Yet, we are facing a "super election," with votes for our next president as well as other federal, state and local representatives — three levels of representational voting meeting strong tides of national discontent. How could any eligible voter consider sitting this one out?

The future of our country hangs in the balance.

Collectively, we've gotten the government we deserve, by virtue of either our indifference (refusing to become informed or to vote) or by our unwillingness to insist our representatives demonstrate the gravity of their calling. Will this vote get us out of this mess of our making?

We cannot choose our way out of the devastation of the storm. But we should think about what we can control: Who is really in charge.

This storm proved deadly; we cannot take that lightly. Our lives are precious; we must not treat them lightly. This election is crucial. God help us.
