I stumbled upon the intriguing "Guide kids into social media swirl" on Nov. 11.
This article provides an interesting perspective for parents who are not well-versed in the matter; however, I feel the piece neglected some key negative points about social media that parents should note.
As the article suggests, the maturity level of any child should be assessed before Internet access is granted. This is especially necessary due to the ease of online messages being taken out of context. What starts as a funny comment can easily materialize into an angry mother in the principal's office.
Parents also should be wary of the psychological effects stemming from social media. Depression, anxiety and aggression are common.
Social media are excellent tools, but, just like in real life, the watchful eye of an informed parent is key in keeping children safe.
