Rex Smith, in his column "Journalism's unforced errors," July 1, says he takes no comfort in the mistakes made by CNN and Fox News in reporting incorrectly the Supreme Court's decision on Obamacare.
How about the discomfort most Americans are having with this new tax and the lack of confidence we have in a government takeover of our health care system?
It took Fox only two minutes to correct its error. It took CNN a few minutes longer. It was an easy mistake to make, since the first 40 pages or so of the decision addressed only the Commerce Clause under the Constitution.
The court ruled Obamacare unconstitutional under this clause. So, CNN and Fox had it partly right. It was on Page 52 of the text where we learned that Chief Justice John Roberts labeled the individual mandate a tax and then went on to label the law constitutional.
Almost two weeks have passed since that decision was handed down, and the Obama administration is still telling the American people the individual mandate is not a tax.
How long is it going to take the Obama administration to fix its error and get it right? RAYMOND GAUS
