Letter: Adult literacy is important

I was pleased to see the article "Letters spell out new life," Nov. 13, because stories like this raise awareness about the important issue of adult literacy.

I am the program coordinator for Literacy Connections serving Columbia and Greene counties. Formerly Literacy Volunteers of America, our mission is to train volunteer tutors to help adult students achieve their reading and writing goals.

We work closely with Questar as many students who need extra reading help are referred to us. Many of them work with their tutors to prepare for the GED exam, pass it and even go on to pursue goals such as higher education and career development.

Tutors meet with students in a public location, usually a library, that is convenient for both. Anyone in Columbia or Greene counties interested in volunteering as a tutor or who needs help with reading and writing should contact our office at 697-8227.
