Letter: Military service a needed duty

I take offense to the Rev. Richard Broderick saying in his commentary ("Beware of the cult of militarism," Nov. 14) that U.S. soldiers should not be called heroes because they fight in "trumped-up wars of empire."

Young men and women who serve in our armed forces are performing a much-needed duty for our country. They didn't ask about the politics; they just knew their country had requested their help so they responded. Many of them died fighting. All of them knew this could occur when they placed themselves in harm's way.

I think to President John F. Kennedy saying, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

These words have been forgotten in our selfish and immoral society. We need to rekindle the idea that serving in our armed forces is a duty and an opportunity for growth.

Instead of ranting against an imaginary cult of militarism (our recent election shows militarism is not flourishing), the Rev. Broderick should thank God for these wonderful children who are willing to die to maintain his right to make these statements.

Our armed forces are the only ones standing between us and our enemies around the world. Our two oceans gave us time to rebuild our reduced armed forces after the attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Now, intercontinental ballistic missiles make our country vulnerable to attack from any foe with the proper hardware.

Further, many people will think the Rev. Broderick's remarks are Catholic policy. More Catholics will leave the church because of his commentary. It must be noted the sentiments belong to the Rev. Broderick; they are not official church doctrine.
