Letter: Reporters now left vulnerable

I read with great interest "Fired for taking stand on story about sitting," Nov. 18, about the journalists at the Register-Star. There was a time when reporters were protected by the Newspaper Guild.

The New York Post was a respectable paper when Dorothy Schiff sold it to its present owners. The reporters continued to be protected by their union and were able to remove their bylines from biased articles that they had been assigned to write by their new publisher.

Unions are much more than a way to obtain financial equity; they also protect us from being forced to act against our morals. This travesty would have been avoided in a unionized Register-Star.
