Letter: Atmosphere of bullying pervasive

Amid much concern about bullying and abuse, it sadly appears to be on the rise, especially among young people.

It is time we take a hard look at the examples of abuse and control so pervasive around us, and most of it due to adult choices and examples.

On so much television, particularly the so-called reality shows, the goal of winning is achieved by putting down other contestants, either verbally, physically or emotionally. The end is shown to justify the means, no matter the cost to others or one's own moral code.

Athletes have been coached to not simply outplay an opponent, but to cause injury and render that person unable to continue playing or, worse, suffer permanent harm. Parents of even the very young put winning above all else and have attacked players, parents or personnel of opposing teams. Think what this teaches those players. People in authority verbally abuse others.

Most of the recent political campaigns sank to name-calling, twisting words and pointing out failings (many of them questionable) of the opponent. These are people we are expected to look up to and trust enough to choose to represent us.

What does this method of winning teach?

Until we demonstrate respect and empathy toward others, we can hardly expect it in return. Until children see adults practicing these qualities, they will simply assume the path to achievement is to denigrate any competition by any means possible. We must demand better in our attitude toward sports and other entertainment, and our everyday relationships with one another.
