Letter: Leaders, reread the Bill of Rights

December 15 marked the 221st anniversary of the ratification in 1791 of the Bill of Rights. Its purpose is to set limits on government actions in regard to personal liberties.

At this point in history, I think many of our leaders in Washington have never read them or do not understand their purpose.

Volumes of information exist concerning the background and rationale behind the Bill of Rights, meaning no excuse exists for them being misunderstood as they appear to be today.

I want to encourage people to read the Bill of Rights in its entirety as it was written in 1789; compare what you read to how its content is spun and skewed today. These rights offer a fixed foundation on which to build a free society — of the people, by the people and for the people, not for the government to control.
