Letter: Mom says speak out about guns

As a mother, I am ashamed of myself. I've always had an opinion on gun control. These assault weapons should not be in our society. And, after each one of these horrific massacres I've wanted to do something, I've never had the courage, letting it pass until I see the next victims' faces.

As a mother of two grown children, I now ask that mothers like me go into your photo album and look at your own children's faces when they were 6 or 7. As difficult as it could be, try and picture your children experiencing what those little babies experienced. Can any mother stay quiet after that?

I believe mothers can have an extremely loud voice in this society. I applaud the women of Mothers Against Drunk Driving who fought until stricter laws were in place to protect the innocent.

That no law can eliminate all these crimes is no excuse to sit by and watch this again. If stricter gun laws, like drunk driving laws, can reduce the number of victims, who could argue against these laws?

As mothers, I think we can do more than any of our politicians right now. I know my first goal will be to educate myself on the gun laws and then make my opinion known to my politicians. I pledge not to let these images disappear and fade from my memory without doing something and hope that more mothers will take the time to do the same.
