Letter: Semiautomatics are unnecessary

In light of the recent horrific and tragic events in Connecticut, the subject of increased gun control rules and regulations has come to the forefront of discussion at both state and federal levels.

More to the point, the focus has been on the removal of semiautomatic weapons from gun shelves, gun shows and anyplace else where they would be in immediate or easy reach of the general populace. Police and the military would be excluded from this initiative.

I imagine some will be opposed to this initiative so I've prepared a short questionnaire with the intent of determining the qualifications for ownership and use of semiautomatic weapons:

Do you need a semiautomatic weapon to come even close to hitting a deer or other woodland creature? If your answer is yes, then you shouldn't be hunting or anywhere near a forest or any other animal habitat.

Do you need a semiautomatic weapon to hit a target closer than 300 yards away? If your answer is yes, then you are in need of shooting lessons and practice.

Do you need a semiautomatic weapon to hit the side of a barn? If your answer is yes, then you need both shooting lessons and eyeglasses.
