D.J. Jaffe's commentary ("OMH needs to go back to its roots," Dec. 19) was right on.
The politicians were wrong when they decided to change the mental health concept in the state, opting for medications over mental hospitals. Putting the mentally ill in jail is not the answer, either. Also putting people with mental problems in low-income housing with senior citizens is a slap in the face to seniors and dangerous.
The system has to go back to the way it was.
