Letter: Laws won't control gun use

The only really effective gun control is in the hands of the person holding the gun.

Constitutionally guaranteed rights to expression and to bear arms have led to a society lacking restraint, and to viewing guns and killing as acceptable entertainment and ultimate problem resolution. Children grow up with images of good guys blasting away bad guys, movie stars in Rambo-like action movies, news reports of shootings, pictures of honored service personnel posing with awesome-firepower combat armaments, and shoot-anything-that-moves video games.

We express shock at our own being killed, yet we gloss over our killing of others. In our society, the value of human life is circumstantial and not ingrained. Without real-life experience of the effects of killings, shooting people could be seen as a reasonable and acceptable way to solve a problem or gaining recognition.

Legislation can restrict readily available firepower. It cannot change social acceptance of its use. National Rifle Association members could stop paying membership dues and electing representatives supporting pro-NRA legislation. So far, not enough people have shown they care enough to change the way things are.
