Letter: Nation's spending needs restraining

Americans must wake up — fast — because our future is being stolen by tax-and-spend D.C. politicians. America's current spending is not sustainable.

Many state and local governments get it, but Washington continues to play "divide and conquer." They blame the rich for not paying their fair share. Incredibly, most D.C. politicians are part of the 1 percent being complained about. The hypocrisy is astounding. We all learned in kindergarten it is good to share your candy and it is wrong to take someone else's. This game is just a diversion to cover up a culture of corruption.

America has a spending problem, not a tax problem. Spending beyond your means results in less freedom. Anyone who has had a credit card debt knows it requires sacrifice and a little restraint to pay off. Government debt is your debt. Every American will very soon be affected, rich and poor, young and old, Republican and Democrat.

The problem is greed. Remember the scene in Disney's "Pinocchio" where the children were given free candy? They made donkeys out of themselves only to be lured into lives of slavery. Americans seem to be acting that way. It seems to be all about what can be gotten for free: phones, day care, health care, free this, free that. Nothing is free.

It is time for us to tell Washington to stop the spending. We must live within our means or suffer the consequences. It is sad that in our lifetime we may have gone from the greatest generation to the least.
