The Mohawk and Hudson Humane Society is a professional and compassionate organization serving the Capital Region for more than 100 years. It has a strong commitment to its spay/neuter, foster, humane education and pit bull advocacy programs, resulting in dramatic reductions in euthanasia over the years.

In the article "Pet deaths cause debate," Feb. 5, a report by a new organization called the Humane Society of the Capital Region gives numbers of incidents of animal shelter euthanasia in the region without context, such as number of pets taken in by shelters.

The president of Mohawk and Hudson Humane Society is quoted as saying these numbers should not be viewed in a vacuum. That's so true. Nor is advocacy work effective when done in a vacuum. This new organization says its goal is to work within the animal welfare community to effect positive regional change. Building relationships with rescue groups may have been a better first step for this organization, as numbers rarely tell the whole story.
