Letter: Woman's decision a personal choice

Thank you for "A Senate snag on women's rights?" Feb. 3, which clarifies the misinformation surrounding Gov. Andrew Cuomo's women's equality agenda.

Concerned Clergy for Choice strongly supports the governor's initiative to strengthen protections against sexual harassment, trafficking and domestic violence. We also believe, as he does, that politicians must not impose themselves on a woman's private, personal decision about her pregnancy.

The 1,000 members of the Concerned Clergy for Choice network represent a wide spectrum of religious denominations. It includes ministers from Baptist, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian churches and more, as well as rabbis, leaders of Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and many lay people from the Roman Catholic faith.

As pastors to women and families facing medical decisions, we regularly witness the importance of leaving a pregnancy decision to the woman, after considering counsel from her doctor, family and, as she wishes, her faith.

The women we counsel deliberate carefully; politicians should not interfere.
