Letter: Fracking won't end the world

Fred LeBrun continues to base his arguments against future natural gas development on long-discredited claims ("End of the anti-frack world near," Aug. 5).

With the exception of a radical few, rational people would agree that natural gas extraction will not result in "the end of the world." This type of hyperbole only flames emotion. What's more, the assertion the world will end is absurd, considering New York has been exploring for natural gas since the early 1800s.

The state would generate significant tax revenue, contrary to Mr. LeBrun's statements. An ad valorem tax, based on production, is allocated locally to municipalities, counties and school districts. The state, however, would collect billions of dollars in new taxes from increases in employment, business opportunity and sales associated with natural gas exploration. It's already occurring in Pennsylvania.

Regarding potential road damage caused by increased truck traffic: Operators routinely work with localities to draft road-use agreements. Some roads may be affected, but operators in Pennsylvania are outspending the government to repair or rebuild roads in the commonwealth, often in a more timely schedule. That type of cooperation will be seen in New York — unless the state's regulatory structure prevents future development.
