I enjoyed the article on the growing popularity of snowshoeing in the North Country ("If the snowshoe fits ..." Feb. 24). You might be interested to know a great opportunity exists to snowshoe right here in the Capital Region for a fraction of the cost.
The Friends of Five Rivers has 100 pairs of snowshoes available for rental for $3 a day at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar.
With free snowshoes for children and more than 10 miles of trails and 450 acres of fields, forests and wildlife, what could be better?
For the cost of one day of one pair of snowshoe rentals up north ($20), an entire family can get a whole season of free snowshoe use at Five Rivers with a membership.
Memberships support the Friends' mission to provide and support environmental education at the center. The Friends, not the state, provide guided school lessons for about 4,000 students each year, as well as summer programs and funding for projects at the center, including the new Wendy Suozzo Guided School Program Building, a product of a joint partnership between the Friends and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Consistently rated "the best nature walk" in the Capital Region, what could make it better than low-cost snowshoe rentals that help support environmental education?
