Letter: Registration will help control guns

Any gun law that does not include mandatory registration of guns would have minimal effect on the regulation of gun use.

Guns, like automobiles, are lethal weapons that, without strict rules for their use and the ability to legally designate the person or persons liable for any damages caused by the gun, would be impossible to regulate.

Enforcement for such regulations will cost money, just as the regulation of automobiles costs money; and registration fees are the fair and just way to fund the costs as well as provide reasonable management of gun use.

Background checks relate to new gun purchases and have no effect on the guns currently in the killing field that are causing the problems we are trying to solve.

Registration of guns will not take away the right to own guns any more than registration of automobiles has taken away the right to own an automobile. It will merely establish legal responsibility for the owners of guns. It is a small cost for a safer society and will produce and pay for more needed jobs to balance the economy.

Registration alone will not eliminate the needless deaths caused by gun use any more than registration of automobiles has eliminated deaths caused by the use of automobiles, but it will help to determine legal liability for misuse and provide the means for safer management.
