Do you think Gov. Andrew Cuomo realizes how many enemies he's making in the state's suburban school districts? The reality is that schools like Bethlehem Central continue to make cuts and lose essential programs and teachers. Governor Cuomo's reformulation of the "high tax aid" would reduce our school's aid by more than $650,000 for this coming year.
Over the last five years, Bethlehem has made drastic cuts to every aspect of the school. The most recent reduced teachers and elective course offerings and severely consolidated bus routes. This aid package proposed by the governor threatens remaining elements of our education programs that have given our school character and value. When my oldest daughter is in her junior year, she may not have elective courses, leaving her day peppered with aimless free periods. My sixth-grade twins' school offerings look even bleaker.
I have been an active member of our Parent Teacher Organization for eight years. I strive for a positive relationship with the school community, especially the hardworking teachers and administrators. Yet, thanks to lacking state aid, an overwhelming feeling of animosity exists between teachers and parents.
Teachers perceive the staff reductions as a choice that voters are making when the reality is nothing remains to be cut but programs and staffing. The climate is completely unhealthy.
My hope is that the governor cares enough to re-evaluate the formulas being used to disseminate school aid. Bethlehem is a community with extremely high taxes, and the current formula has resulted in less money and larger gaps for our district.
