Letter: Gun control has many savings

With all the mass shootings that have occurred in the past year, gun control is on the agenda of many politicians. Supporters of gun control argue the availability of guns is contributing to violent crimes and laws restricting access to weapons will result in fewer shootings. Although these issues are important, the economics of gun violence is often overlooked. Despite how you view this issue, gun regulation would benefit our nation.

Besides the 30,000 Americans killed by guns each year, an additional 70,000 are injured in nonfatal gun crimes. These people have to pay for medical treatment, rehabilitation and other expenses related to injury, much of which is passed on to taxpayers for uninsured victims. One study, citing U.S. Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention statistics, estimates U.S. gun deaths and injuries cost $32 billion in 2005 due to medical and lost productivity expenses. These numbers are much higher than the $11.7 billion in sales that gun and ammunition makers will see this year.

While the firearms business may suffer if restrictions limit the availability of guns, the losses they will see will be minimal compared to the potential gains for society as a whole. Besides saving money on medical expenses and less lost productivity, gun control could lead to savings in other ways as well. Schools and businesses are increasing security purchases like metal detectors and security guards, due to the fear of guns; this would be unnecessary if stricter gun regulations were in place.

Looking socially and economically, there is no doubt gun regulation would be beneficial.
