Letter: Give Cuomo credit for SAFE Act

In light of the volume of letters on gun control, I have been reluctant and apathetic to post another. Opinions are flying like locusts; the impact has been lessened by the sheer volume of opposing views. However, the Feb. 28 march on the state Capitol by gun rights advocates, and the accompanying remarks by Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, referring to the NY SAFE Act as "... probably one of the most egregious acts by government I've seen defying our nation's history" has caused me to take up the pen.

With that remarkably thoughtless statement, he has left himself no wiggle room, no proportional adjective to describe a truly egregious act (the 10-year Iraq war, for instance).

What is this "impeachable offense" Gov. Andrew Cuomo committed (as some signage at the rally implied)?

The answer is: He did something unthinkable in the annals of today's government; he acted promptly and decisively to correct a wrong, which is, relatively speaking, light-years overdue.

It should be of supernatural indifference whether he used the message of necessity to speed things along or it sat there for the usual three days to arguably give our legislators "time to confer" with the likes of the protester pictured sporting a sign that read: "The Second Amendment is not for Shooting Deer." The subliminal message here is terrifying.

To all those naysayers of the SAFE Act like Kolb whose feet are growing into the state legislative carpet, instead of criticizing the governor why not give him a vote of confidence for taking the bull by the horns? If adjustments have to made, make them.
