I read with great interest Lynda Shrager's column, "Options for older drivers," March 9. The article truly highlights many issues older drivers face and it also offers great advice, such as the lumbar support or cars with digital speedometers for quicker speed readings and heated seats for joint relief.
It's also important to note that, locally, several options exist that can help improve the safety of older drivers and others on the road, especially given not everyone is able to purchase a new car to accommodate their health issues.
CarFit® is a free program offered by the Driver Fitness Center of Colonie Senior Service Centers that is confidential and helps ensure a car "fits" the driver. A 20-minute assessment performed by trained technicians assesses various aspects of the car, ranging from mirror adjustment to seat placement and more. An occupational therapist is on hand to offer advice regarding affordable assisted devices, such as a seat lift, mirror extenders or a device to more comfortably wear a seat belt.
The Driver Fitness Center also provides free consultations for those concerned about their driving and offers solutions to help seniors stay on the road for as long as is safe. With more and more senior drivers on the road every day, it's crucial that we provide options to help them maintain their independence while keeping everyone safe.
