The sad saga of the dismemberment of St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet, as chronicled in a succession of photographs in the Times Union, is all but over.
Had the Nigro and Golub companies been able to rise above the bottom line, they would have been heroes to the residents of Watervliet and to preservationists everywhere who understand the importance of protecting iconic historic structures.
In the end, neither proved up to the task. St. Patrick's joins the long litany of buildings demolished for the sake of a parking lot. It might have been otherwise.
