The failure to require background checks for the purchase of assault rifles and large-capacity magazines is frightening for several reasons.
First, this failure downplays the role such weapons played in tragedies that include Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo. Do we need such horrible events to occur in every state before such legislation is passed?
Second, these failures demonstrate the political clout of the National Rifle Association that argues against such regulations despite the fact that 90 percent of Americans support them. Based on the continuing resistance of the NRA for background checks, I suggest the name of the NRA be changed to "No Respect for Americans."
What can be done? First, those in the 90 percent can contribute to organizations against the stance of the NRA and those politicians who grovel for their support. Second, we should use our political power (our votes) to support politicians who have the moral fortitude to pass regulations limiting the availability of "weapons of mass destruction" that have too often be used to inflict death and suffering
Finally, it is necessary to remember that we are all members of an extended family — and that disrespect and consequent violence harm all of us.
