Letter: Bill will place animal crimes under penal code

I read with interest the Advocate article that referenced the Consolidated Animal Crimes bill as an important step against animal cruelty ("A case of both sides being right — or wrong," April 28).

Last month, the New York State Humane Society held its lobby day at the state Capitol. Advocates from across the state gathered to meet with their elected representatives. The bill (A775a/S1776) was a major focus of attention.

This bill will place animal crimes under the penal code (currently under Agriculture and Markets), increasing the seriousness of animal crimes. Doing so will also assure that law enforcement officials will have greater understanding of such crimes and how to deal with them.

To those New Yorkers who believe cruel and inhumane treatment of animals should be investigated by law enforcement and treated as a serious crime, I encourage you to contact your elected state representative and ask them to support this important piece of legislation.
