To understand the direction the United States has taken since the days of our Founding Fathers, one must understand the reason for that direction. The propaganda system is usually the answer. The American people continue to be sold on the idea that certain individuals are the pillars of society when they are quite often the dredges of the Earth.
While watching the dedication of the George W. Bush library, I noticed Mr. Bush became teary-eyed as he spoke. My reaction was: He should cry — for the nearly 5,000 American soldiers who died in his insane war, for the more than 30,000 soldiers who were wounded, and for the thousands upon thousands of Iraqis including civilians who were killed.
The fathers, mothers, husbands and wives of the men and women killed or injured in Mr. Bush's war refuse to admit that they died or were maimed in vain. Their feelings are understandable even though their conclusions are filled with emotion rather than reason.
A few years ago, Andrew Greeley in a commentary referred to the "bizarre deification" of Ronald Reagan ("Country engulfed in an epidemic of greed," Aug. 21, 2004). Do the other living presidents who attended the dedication intend to deify Mr. Bush in the same way? That they attended is despicable; their remarks disgusting.
In truth, Mr. Bush and his administration should have been brought up on charges of treason and subjected to the punishment the charge brings if they were found guilty; and they certainly were.
