Letter: Retired inspector deserves respect

I grew up with Inspector John Burke and remember well when he started on the Albany Police Department in 1971. Two years later, in the line of duty, he was wounded in a shootout on Delaware Avenue. Not long after, he was promoted to detective.

After 20 years of service, Mr. Burke retired but re-entered the workforce to head the narcotics unit for the Albany County Sheriff's Department — a position he held until the age of 62.

Lost in all the unflattering press, we forget how brave men and women like Inspector Burke are, we forget the risks they take and the effect it has on their families.

I am proud to call Inspector Burke a friend. He is a man of integrity who deserves our respect.
