Letter: U.S. principles fundamental to all

David Welch in his letter ("Secure border and fix the system," May 21) writes about a person invading one's home, eating one's food, sleeping on one's couch, and demanding to be welcomed as part of the family. The problem with his analogy is that his home is not my home, and neither he nor anyone else own the entirety of America.

He refers to "illegal aliens" as if a mere act of a legislature can rightfully declare anyone to be "illegal." What rights would he permit me to invite someone into my home, to work for me in my factory, even shop at my grocery store?

Rights are not the exclusive property of U.S. citizens. The principles upon which this country were founded are fundamental to all people.

And, contrary to the feelings of Mr. Welch and others, it is not only the marginalized immigrants who demand a path to citizenship and equal treatment and protection. It is every American citizen who truly believes in justice for all.
