In her May 20 letter, Rose Miller suggests that Concerned Clergy for Choice should "either shed their religious garments and hypocrisy or act responsibly."
Her perception of "acting responsibly" is that clergy should oppose "choice."
The First Amendment guarantees an individual's right to openly oppose choice and also the right to openly support choice, regardless of occupation. Moreover, it guarantees clergy and others the right to interpret their religious beliefs as they deem appropriate.
There are those who do not seem to accept that we are a diverse nation of diverse views and beliefs. As Americans, we have the right to act on our views and beliefs, as long as our actions are lawful. We have the right to reject abortion as a personal choice, but we do not have the right to deny others abortion as a personal choice since abortion is a legal option. Sadly, there are individuals who wish to impose their religious beliefs on the general population. Fortunately, we are a nation of laws — not a theocracy.
