Letter: N.Y. Senate failed women's health

The Times Union's editorial, "For women, a clearer path" (June 23), highlights a point all New Yorkers should know and remember. Access to safe, legal abortion is not secure in New York, "not with the Senate as it stands today."

The state Senate's leaders and senators who oppose comprehensive reproductive health care access failed the women and families of New York miserably in voting against the opportunity to enshrine Roe vs. Wade into New York law.

If passed, this would have affirmed that a woman may make her own reproductive health care decisions, just as she can today, should Congress or the Supreme Court take further actions to erode reproductive rights.

New Yorkers should know where the state Senate stands on these important issues and, at election time, voters should recall which senators stood up for women's health and equality in last month's vote. In 2014, it will be important to remember come November.
