Letter: First, let's make amends with Native Americans

It's fascinating how many people write letters critical of Israel when they live in a country created by the killing or forced transfer of the native population. Why is the fate of Palestinians who live 6,000 miles away more important than the plight of so many Native Americans who continue to live on reservations under impoverished conditions? Is there a statute of limitations on crimes against humanity? Do such letter writers seek to alleviate the shame of their own history by transferring it onto Israel?

Jews who settled in Israel at least had a historical connection to the land for over 3,000 years. What historical connection to the Americas did European conquerors have to Native American land? Why aren't these writers addressing problems in their own backyard? Perhaps some Israelis find their critics hypocritical.

For better results, and a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict ending in two separate nations at peace, perhaps these writers should first try leading by example, pushing to make amends to the Native American population.

I suggest everyone take a good look at the world we live in and recognize that sovereignty alone is no panacea for ending human suffering. It's everywhere. Ask any Syrian, starving African child or American disenfranchised by the gutting of the Voting Rights Act or living in poverty, even here in the Capital District.
