Letter: Boy Scouts promote acceptance of all people

The Times Union has a responsibility to present disparate points of view, including Daniel Moran's June 5 ignorant criticism of the Boy Scouts of America's decision to accept gays and lesbians or, as he put it, "to promote homosexuality among its youth" and ignore its "Duty to God."

The Boy Scouts are "promoting" the acceptance of people for who they are, not who bigots of the world believe they should be. Mr. Moran asserts that corporate sponsors influenced that decision. If he is correct, Mr. Moran should reflect on the fact that corporations react to public opinion and they acquiesced because the general public agreed that the Boy Scouts did the right thing.

This is a secular issue and the "Duty to God" has no place in his argument.

The price that America's children "will now be left paying ... for this lack of wisdom and judgment" is to teach tolerance and understanding of a blindly feared aspect of human sexuality to those who simply know no better.

I have only contempt for Mr. Moran's point of view and sympathy for those whose lives that view infects.
