Letter: No comparison in debate on climate

Malcolm J. Sherman's letter ("Models don't show climate emergency," July 16) argues: "The failure of climate models to predict the last 15 years supports those who have been saying we don't face a climate emergency."

Sherman quotes German meteorologist Hans von Storch saying, "If things continue as they have been, in five years at the latest, we will need to acknowledge that something is fundamentally wrong with our climate models. ... A 20-year pause in global warming does not occur in a single modeled scenario." However, Mr. Sherman fails to mention that in the same interview, Mr. von Storch, when asked "Does this throw the entire theory of global warming into doubt?" replied "I don't believe so. We still have compelling evidence of a man-made greenhouse effect. There is very little doubt about it."

Questioning the models of climate change and questioning the greenhouse effect are not one and the same.
