Letter: Corporations aid nation's economy

It was with considerable dismay that I read Lee Russ' commentary ("Corporate power is a danger," July 9).

The sundry, rambling and specious arguments seemed to just pour down the page with the determination and focus of pooling molasses. Darting from topic to topic, there seemed to be no real focus to an argument other than that the author is rather miffed and is further miffed that others are not in a comparable mood.

The crux of Mr. Russ' argument is perhaps that corporations are evil and that the U.S. electorate should be wary of them. As providers of employment for nearly half of the U.S. work force, it would seem an odd choice that one would act so ungratefully.

They are also entities that, when they work in their own interest, they necessarily work in the interests of their owners, who want the corporation to succeed, and the employees, which the corporation needs in order to function. That is quite a number of people.

Perhaps it should be considered that "the people" are not as troubled by the actions of this country's main generators of wealth and goods as the author is.

By pinning blame on organizational structures for spinelessness of politicians, Americans' love of cheap goods, or alleged over-reach of security forces, Mr. Russ seems to have a lack of understanding and focus. He seems to be disappointed in corporations and American citizens; I am disappointed in the Times Union for considering his commentary worthy of inclusion.
