Letter: Pick substance, not showmanship

I read or heard somewhere Abraham Lincoln would never win a presidential debate because he would have been too slow in thoughtful consideration before giving an answer.

Is that true? Of course, we cannot be sure, but what we do know is that the media have pressed the idea of form over the concerns of all of us.

Perhaps the reason for this is that each topic under discussion during a debate cannot really be looked at in the short time it is given. Thus, we look at how the candidates performed rather than what the candidates said.

I'm hoping votes will be cast on what we believe is good for America not on the showmanship of either candidate.
