Gov. Chris Christie has repeated what the National Republican Party folks were saying after losing in 2008. They need to be listening, and talking, to Hispanics, African-Americans and women.
Sounds good. But what about the extremists in their party who are labeled as tea party members. Not only should the Grand Old Party be talking to them, but the Democrats should find ways to bridge that gap.
Those of this ilk, who want to see the established systems of government shut down, are obviously sincere in their beliefs. As I read that they believe that, unless there are dramatic changes to effect what they are fighting for, the world will come to an end. If you don't see that, just listen to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas; Rep. Michelle Bachman, R-Minn.; and Sarah Palin, Alaska's former Republican governor.
Negotiating with someone who has dug in his heels is extremely difficult, but that's what diplomacy is all about. And from that effort both parties may learn something and find ways to close on issues that will benefit us all.
I have to be critical of the media for promoting the antagonism between those with different beliefs. Problem-solving can only be effectively accomplished by talking, listening and sharing your needs and wishes. Calling each other names, or having the national media doing it, is very destructive to our coming together again as a people.
