Letter: Much blame, not enough values

I have just about had it with Alice Green's rants about a conspiracy by white police and federal agents targeting young black men for arrest in Albany ("'New Jim Crow' or public safety," Oct. 17).

The police are tasked with the job of trying to make the city safe. This job would be a lot easier if all parents took responsibility for their children and ensure they are home at night and not getting involved in criminal activity.

It would also be helpful if Ms. Green and other prominent members of the community solicited the help of the community to report criminal activity, suspected or otherwise, to the police.

It really is time to stop blaming the schools and the police for the inordinate number or arrests of young black men. The responsibility falls on parents or guardians to teach moral values, responsibility and the value of education in order to help their children become law-abiding and productive citizens.
