Much press has been given to the recent canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha. It should be noted she is the first Native American elevated to sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.
Cungagnaq, a native of Kodiak Island, Alaska, is the first-ever Native American to become a saint. Also known as Saint Peter the Aleut, and the Martyr of San Francisco, Cungagnaq was martyred for his faith in California in 1815 and declared a saint by the Orthodox Christian Church in 1980.
