I am writing in response to Bob Bethel's letter ("Bible denounces gay relationships," Oct. 31) in which he condemns gay marriage and politicians and others who support it. Not permitting same-sex marriage as a matter of public policy is wrong on so many levels.
Mr. Bethel uses religious Scripture as the basis of his belief. While he is entitled to his religious beliefs, he is barred by the First Amendment from imposing them on the rest of the country.
I find it interesting that the same source Mr. Bethel quotes also demands stoning to death those who commit a whole range of infractions, including victims of rape if they do not cry out loudly.
As a pluralistic and enlightened society, we don't follow that command either.
