Letter: Reform needs teacher input

If you want to see the major problem with education reform, just read your article about the New NY Education Reform Commission ("A new path for education," July 11).

I don't know the background of Geoffrey Canada of Harlem Children's Zone, but no one else named on the panel is a classroom teacher. Your article mentions only one classroom teacher testified before the commission.

Where is the input from the people who are facing the problems and who will have to implement the changes? Who are these accepted experts?

Maybe if classroom teachers are treated like professionals and consulted (remember: most of them are educated beyond a master's degree and have the classroom experience), meaningful education reform can take place.
