It is unconscionable that calls are being made to cut benefits for the middle class while billions of dollars have been and are being spent to prop up corporations and tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
Economists and many millionaires are correct when they say that increases to the tax rate the wealthy pay will have no detrimental effect on the economic recovery, but cuts in benefits and increases to the tax rate the middle class pays may cause another recession.
Economists are correct when they say the deficit is not the No. 1 problem facing us. Lack of jobs and wage stagnation are.
Where is the outrage in Congress against companies that pay their workers so little they are forced to turn to Medicaid and food stamps to survive? Against companies that train their workers how to apply for government assistance so that the taxpayer subsidizes their payroll?
Until the billions that are squandered propping up the banks that make bad loans, the companies that refuse to pay a living wage, and the companies soaking up our dollars in the military-industrial-security complex are brought under control, Congress has no right asking the middle-class taxpayer to take a hit on the benefits we have paid for and have earned.
