Letter: In Albany, it's politics as usual

"Jennings will be mayor as long as he wants to be," says Albert Paolucci, Democratic committeeman, in his Nov. 21 letter "Albany benefits from experience."

By what authority can Mr. Paolucci make such a statement?

Is not the mayor elected by the people? Or is he suggesting that the mayor is appointed by the committee? Does this same system apply to all "elected" officials in Albany?

We read of such activities in Russia and other pretend democracies, where I would be imprisoned for these remarks. Does that follow in Albany?

Furthermore, when is a threat just advice? "I would say to Ms. Sheehan: Losing the mayoral race will put your next election for treasurer in jeopardy. It is not too late to change your mind."

This open threat to city Treasurer Kathy Sheehan, who is running for mayor, reeks of power politics. Does it carry the imprimatur of Mr. Paolucci's Democrat Party?

These remarks are reprehensible. Sure, it's an open secret that the Democratic Party controls Albany politics. Until now, however, the committee had the decency to keep these activities behind closed doors. Now, they are thrown in the public's face.

Please, Mr. Paolucci, close the door as you leave.
