Letter: Fund agencies to avert tragedies

The massacre in Connecticut was horrific. It is not the guns, the capacity of the clips, or the bullets that killed those innocent children and adults and scarred the other students for life.

If our politicians want to do something positive, they should promote the enhancement of the current laws by offering police agencies enough resources to arrest and prosecute offenders for illegal possession of guns. They should institute a carefully written law requiring safe storage and control of guns.

Meanwhile, our liberal society has removed many of the institutions and controls for people with mental health issues and integrated them into society.

Is this justice? Is it good government?

No, it is neither. It was done as a means of cost containment. Our government should stop supporting foreign economies and take care of our own population. People like the gunman could be aided by government putting money into programs to help those with mental health issues, rather than putting money into rebuilding the infrastructure of communities outside the U.S. borders.

The Second Amendment is a means of protection to the citizens from threats both foreign and domestic. This is a basic right, not to be watered down or redefined. Our ancestors fought and died for these protections. I am certain more citizens are willing to fight in any forum to protect those rights.

I am sick, emotionally and personally saddened by this tragedy, but any politicians' feeble ideas to disarm the law-abiding citizen is grandstanding. I suggest that they could gather more support donating their inflated salaries to child and youth programs.
