Letter: Stop the rhetoric, get rid of guns

Has this country, finally and irrevocably, reached a moment of truth on gun control?

Why does it take a tragedy of epic proportion for our legislators, whose historic sidestepping of the issue is only exceeded by their sheer terror of the National Rifle Association, to realize that not even this redoubtable entity can dismiss it as just another psycho gone amuck?

I believe the NRA, with its Medusa head that turns anyone who dare gaze in askance to stone, has met its Perseus.

This time it is going to need more than another of its inane Second Amendment platitudes like "guns don't kill people, people kill people" to make this one go away.

The NRA's conscience has always been like a well-trained dog that, when these tragedies occur, tell it to go sit in the corner.

The Sandy Hook shootings have put everything into perspective. It has made me realize that the impending "fiscal cliff" with all its dire implications is not even in my frontal lobes at this moment.

The magnitude of this tragedy is all-consuming. President Barack Obama said it best: "Our hearts are broken."

Now, the time has come for men and women of honor to set aside the rhetoric and pick up the gauntlet that these little angels have thrown down and put an end to this evil that has plagued our nation — by getting rid of the guns.
