The Times Union has chosen to endorse an inferior candidate for Saratoga County sheriff ("Zurlo for Saratoga sheriff," Sept. 3).
Rather than compare the candidates based on qualifications, the entire basis for the endorsement appears to be minor semantics regarding enforcement of the SAFE Act.
Having listened closely to both candidates' appearances on New York Post State Editor Fred Dicker's radio show, it seems Michael Zurlo's only "qualification" is that he has been a good soldier in the Republican Party — not your typical Times Union endorsee.
By its endorsement, the newspaper clearly prefers anyone who agrees more with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's policies over candidates who do not, regardless of qualifications.
It takes supreme courage to take a stand on behalf of the citizens of this county the way Jeff Gildersleeve has done.
We all deserve a sheriff who is not only more qualified but willing to put it on the line for all of our rights. Please join me in voting for Mr. Gildersleeve on Sept. 10.
